| In recent years there has been rapid growth in the volume of capital being invested in impact strategies. This growth has led to concerns that there has concurrently been a weakening of the standards of impact investing.
The past two years have seen an explosion of interest in integrating environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues into investing, and in sustainable and responsible investing more generally. This enthusiasm has bled into rapidly growing interest in impact investing. The Global Impact investing Network (GIIN) has defined impact investments as “investments made with the intention to generate positive, measurable social and environmental impact alongside a financial return” This definition does not distinguish between the impact delivered by the underlying investments and the impact associated with the investment activity itself. It also doesn’t distinguish between the stage at which the investment takes place, nor the liquidity associated with the investment market.
